We are a committed group of about 20 catechists who 'break open' the Word of God with children. We prepare and present the word of God in simple yet interesting ways - always led by the Holy Spirit – to children, so that they can understand, relate to and respond to the Good News. This is where children encounter Christ in the Living Word. We attend courses at the Office of the New Evangelization (ONE) to refresh and enrich our faith and God's plan and mission for us.
Given the enthusiastic response of the children, and size of our parish, the Liturgy of the Word with Children is held during the 6pm Saturday Sunset Mass, and the 11.30am Sunday Mass. After the Introductory Rites in the main church, the priest invites all the children to assemble at the foot of the altar, and they will then proceed out of church to a separate room.
Here, we 'break open' the Word with the children through Para-liturgies, skits, audio-visuals and even puppet shows to encourage the children to hear Christ speak to each one through the Readings and the Gospel, and thereafter, respond to the Good News. During the Offertory in the main church, the children will then return to church to rejoin their families for the second part of the Mass - the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Our objective is to simplify the Word of God so that children have a message they can understand, and 'chew on' the Word for the rest of the week. Children who have received First Holy Communion are encouraged to attend the Mass celebration in the main church as their understanding and attention grow. Parents of young children aged 4-5 are encouraged to attend with their kids for as many sessions as needed for the children to get comfortable with their new surroundings. Thereafter the children can be on their own. Parents’ attendance with your children at the Liturgy of the Word with Children counts for your participation at Mass in the main church, as we will all rejoin the community during the offertory for the liturgy of the Eucharist.
We organise rites such as Stations of the Cross for children during Lent, a Lenten calendar for children and Easter celebrations usually with a skit or audio –visual presentation. We also put together Easter goodie bags for the children. A Monthly Rosary and Eucharistic Adoration is also held.
The Children's Mass Booklet (the blue book placed at the back of the various entrances of the church) is produced by us as are the personalised Holy Family stickers and artwork prepared for the various seasons. We are proud to have begun the Heart of the Holy Family Project, which sees our members distribute goodies such as rice; sugar and other necessities to help the aged in our community meet some of their basic needs.
